Mike Batty receives the UCGIS Research Award for 2012

"The University Consortium in Geographic Information Science gives the award annually to the originator(s) of a particularly outstanding research contribution to geographic information science (GIScience). The main criterion for choosing the awardee is the impact of the research on the theory and practice of GIScience, or on research using GIS, or on geographic information technology".

Mike is the first person outside of North America to receive the award since it was instituted 10 years ago. The award whose citation you can read in full here was given for his work in theories and models of cities, particularly his work in complexity theory, cellular automata and fractals, and in recognition of CASA which he has built up since leaving the US for London in 1995. The picture shows him receiving the award in Washington DC last week (May 31st) from Laxmi Ramasubramanian, this years’ President of the UCGIS.
