Book Launch

On 18th February CASA held a book launch for two new books - The New Science of Cities by Mike Batty (Chair, and Professor of Planning, CASA) and Building Types and Built Forms by Phil Steadman (Professor of Urban and Built Form Studies, The Bartlett School of Graduate Studies). The event took place at UCL's Grant Museum where over 100 guests enjoyed talks by both authors as well an insight into the work of the museum by Mark Carnall (Curator, Grant Museum of Zoology). MIT press were also present, providing guests with the opportunity to buy the books.

In The New Science of Cities, Mike suggests that to understand cities we must view them not simply as places in space but as systems of networks and flows. To understand space, he argues, we must understand flows, and to understand flows, we must understand networks—the relations between objects that comprise the system of the city. As building types change over time, they come to occupy different positions within the worlds of possible forms. Building Types and Built Forms is filled with over 400 illustrations, many drawn especially for the book. It offers a new theoretical approach, combined with a series of historical accounts of building types, some well known, some less familiar. Visit Troubador publishing to find out more about the book.
