Professor Michael Batty Awarded Honorary Doctorate from Hong Kong Baptist University

Congratulations to Prof Mike Batty who received an honorary doctorate for his pioneering contributions to computational urban research and the social sciences.

Professor Michael Batty CBE FRS FBA has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Social Sciences degree from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in recognition of his outstanding professional accomplishments and contributions to society.

The conferment ceremony was held on 18 November 2024 at HKBU, where Prof Batty was one of five recipients honoured for their achievements.

From 1995 to 2010, Prof Batty was the founding director of The Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA), As a pioneer in computational urban research, Prof Batty’s work in mapping and visualising cities using computational methods has advanced the interdisciplinary intersection of urban planning, geography and data science.

Recently, Prof Batty published The Computable City: Histories, Technologies, Stories, Predictions (MIT Press, 2024), which examines how computers simulate cities and their increasing integration into urban environments, influencing human behaviour and urban evolution.

Throughout his career, he has received several awards, including the Royal Town Planning Institute’s Gold Medal, the Founder’s Medal from the Royal Geographical Society and election to the Royal Society, British Academy and Chinese Academy of Sciences.
