The Kiln data visualisation studio was set up by one journalist (Duncan Clark) and one technologist (Robin Houston) to create advanced interactive data visualisations and maps that really tell a story. This talk gives advice on data storytelling, drawing on Kiln projects such as The Ship Map, In Flight and The Carbon Map. It covers techniques such as audio-led maps with voiceovers (“Talkies”) and gives an demo of Flourish – Kiln’s new data visualisation platform designed to make interactive storytelling available to all.
Duncan Clark is the cofounder of Kiln, the award-winning London-based visualisation studio behind the Flourish platform. Duncan was previously a data journalist (Guardian), author (Profile Books) and publisher (Profile/Penguin) with a special interest in climate change and technology. He was a honorary researcher at UCL while coauthoring his last book, The Burning Question, a big-picture look at energy and climate issues.
