Our brand-new Postgraduate Architecture Short Course: Future Architecture is a 3-week, in-person programme designed to provide participants with a comprehensive yet accessible introduction to architectural design at The Bartlett School of Architecture. This course will introduce participants to foundational concepts and core skills to support the study of Architecture at postgraduate level, and a career in the field beyond this.  

Future Architecture invites participants to explore how architecture intersects with their existing expertise and importantly, how they can bring fresh perspectives to the discipline. Alongside essential skilling, a key focus of the course is on creative methodologies that engage with racial, spatial, and climate justice, highlighting their fundamental role in architectural education and the development of a more equitable and sustainable built environment. 

Over three weeks, participants will gain an immersive experience of studio culture and The Bartlett’s world-class facilities, with sessions ranging from site and practice visits, lectures, technical skills delivery, design project and portfolio development, individual feedback and peer review. Through an iterative and experimental approach to design, participants will engage with both analogue and digital tools, gaining practical experience in project and portfolio building as key components of postgraduate architecture study. 

This course is an ideal opportunity for those considering a career change into architecture or looking to understand the skills, methodologies, and critical perspectives that shape future architectural practice.

Who should apply?  

This course has been specifically designed for individuals interested in studying Architecture at postgraduate level who are seeking an introduction to this topic at The Bartlett. We encourage applications from students and professionals from all backgrounds, including architecture and related design disciplines, who are curious about transitioning their career into architecture. The course serves as both as an introduction to architecture and an opportunity to refine existing skills in a collaborative environment, alongside diverse peers and academics. 

Please note that due to the intermediate nature of this course, we can only accept participants aged 18 years old or over at the start of the course. Participants travelling from abroad should check if they need to apply for a visa and are responsible for securing any visas that may be required. The fee and registration onto this course do not include accommodation. All participants must arrange their own accommodation, which can be done privately or via UCL Summer Residencies which offers Central London Accommodation for the general public. 

How will I be taught?   

Through design tutorials, skills workshops and group presentations, the course will introduce participants to different methods of architectural design and how these can be used to create compelling concepts and propositions. The Future Architecture short course will be based in Bartlett School of Architecture’s Bloomsbury campus in central London, making full use of studio spaces, workshops, resources and facilities. Materials and equipment will be provided as part of this course.  

Future Architecture will be led and taught by current BSA faculty with experience in postgraduate-level teaching who will offer their unique expertise and professional insight to support each student and their individual needs. Participants will gain insight from a series of guest speakers and students, exposing them to different perspectives and aspects of the discipline.  

In addition to the studio-based teaching, participants will also have the opportunity to visit a professional architecture practice, relevant art and design exhibitions, local landmarks and specific sites of interest in London as part of the course. These methods of cultural engagement will reinforce the studio-based production undertaken throughout the course.  

What will I gain?   

Participants will be guided in documenting and formatting their design work into a portfolio or research proposal, with dedicated sessions on visual communication and presentation techniques. This will equip participants with knowledge in how to produce a creative portfolio when applying for a career in the field or a postgraduate degree in architecture. 

Additionally, in preparation for the new regulatory framework introduced by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) that will come in place in the UK in 2027, aiming to widen access to the profession from other fields, the course will provide an overview of pathways to becoming a qualified architect in the UK and the postgraduate architecture application process at the BSA.  

A Certificate of Participation will be awarded upon completion of the course.

• Expression of interest outlining your current skills and experience, and why you would like to take part in this course  
• 1-3 key images of any previous design or creative work you have undertaken, or a link to a website or online portfolio.  

Once your application has been reviewed and if it is accepted, successful applicants will receive a payment link to secure their place. Please note that places are limited, so early application is encouraged. Applications will be reviewed on a regular basis.
