Bartlett Summer Studio 2018

This course offers students already studying architecture or a related discipline at university the chance to diversify their skills.

The Bartlett Summer Studio
About the course

The Bartlett Summer Studio is an academic and architectural adventure, enabling students to build their design skills and conceptual and critical thinking within a playful atmosphere of experimentation and fabrication. With two and four-week options, there’s also the opportunity to prepare a substantial portfolio during this course.

Students work on a common brief whilst also generating their own programme. Our two-week core courses can be combined with a portfolio-making weekend or students can equally opt for the four-week course, which allows them to focus on the final project.

Supported by highly-skilled tutors, students participate in a varied range of workshops to develop and learn advanced techniques. Individual portfolio-making sessions complement the longer course. Supplementary to architectural design classes are workshops in specialist skills, providing an introduction to the spectrum of techniques and knowledge that architectural education and the built environment demands.

Visits to exhibitions and cultural events are organised every week so that the community of students can participate in the excitement of being at the heart of a vibrant capital city. Special invited lecturers will give talks and be involved as external critics. We also provide information on the application process at The Bartlett.

The course will finish with a joint one-day exhibition of work. A private view will give the staff, students and their guests a chance to celebrate their work. A Certificate of Study will also be awarded on the day.

I would highly recommend the Summer Studio for everyone. It's such a good experience - every architect should take part!

Scholarships

There are means-tested scholarship places available for the short Summer Studio course. The deadline for scholarship applications is Friday 13 April 2018. If you would like to be considered for one of these places, please email bartlett.shortcourses@ucl.ac.uk putting Summer School Scholarship in the subject.

Two or four-week courses

Short - two weeks

This two-week course will enable students to work closely with tutors on a brief set in London. Students will work individually on core concepts and pieces, which will form the basis of a portfolio. We recommend taking a further portfolio course to consolidate the work outcome.

Extended - four weeks

This four-week course gives each individual time to create a personal agenda integrated in the studio brief. Students are able to concentrate more deeply on the unique outcome of the course, with more time for in-depth research and explorations.
