Each summer 16 – 18-year-old students explore architecture at The Bartlett, with five-day, ten-day and three-week programmes.

Introduction

The Bartlett Summer Schools are an opportunity for 16 to 18-year-olds to explore imaginative thinking, surveying, speculation and construction for the first time, using The Bartlett's facilities.

Welcoming participants from all over the world, students work individually and collaboratively to produce drawings, objects, models and larger installations, under the guidance of The Bartlett’s skilled tutors.

The courses are taught through a series of small group tutorials, finishing with a joint one-day exhibition of work. A private view will give staff, students and their guests a chance to celebrate the work produced during the course. A Certificate of Study will be awarded on the day (please note, this programme is not an accredited course).

Over the past nine years, students have developed and presented projects in different media, such as installation pieces, single drawing, walking models, books and performing apparatus.

Students will be able to specify their interest in Drawing or Making and need to indicate during the admissions process, which preferable route they would like to experience.

The tutors are exceptionally experienced in pushing us to achieve our full potential, by encouraging us to think deeper and beyond through asking the right questions.

The Bartlett’s Summer School has shown me many aspects of architecture: how to not only just look at the environment, but to see and experience it. I learnt a variety of new skills, from how to sketch in 10 seconds while you’re walking to how to use different kinds of architectural tools.

Five-day Summer School

A short course to introduce 16 to 18-year-olds to the study of architecture at degree level in London. Students will visit several architectural exhibitions, offices and sites of interest before working for three days on a collaborative drawing or model, informed by their experiences.

This short course has been designed for students looking for a brief introduction to The Bartlett School of Architecture and to develop their understanding of the practice as fundamentally collaborative, as well as their drawing and model-making skills. The five-day course is only a taster and will not cover the entire study experience.

Is it for me?

We're looking for applications from motivated students who are passionate about architecture and design. There are no required skills or subjects.

Ten-day Summer School

A creative and conceptual introduction for 16 to 18-year-olds interested in studying architecture at degree level in London. This course introduces imaginative thinking, surveying, speculation and construction within the context of The Bartlett School of Architecture, and does not always cover the traditional understanding of architecture. Students work on an individual piece, designed throughout the course responding to a brief, supported by intensive tutorials and studio sessions.

Each student will have the opportunity to experience The Bartlett's studio culture or fabrication within the studio, and each course has several presentations where students learn to express their creative thought processes.

During their time at The Bartlett, students will receive an introduction to our undergraduate degrees and the application process specific to The Bartlett.

Is it for me?

We're looking for applications from students with drawing and making skills, developed at school or independently, and an interest in creative practice.

Three-week Summer School

Designed for highly motivated students who are actively pursuing an architectural or related creative degree, this extended course facilitates an in-depth individual project. Students produce a high-quality sequence of work which they may wish to include in their application to study architecture at degree level.

Through intensive teaching, students will be encouraged to experiment and to test new concepts, materials and ideas. Students will be able to experience studio teaching and our state of the arts fabrication workshops.

During their time at The Bartlett, students will receive an introduction to our undergraduate degrees and the application process specific to The Bartlett.

Is it for me?

We're looking for applications from students with strong drawing and making skills, who are able to work intensively on an independent project.
