The Year Out, also known as Stage One, is a period of work experience taken by architecture students after completing their undergraduate Architecture Part 1 degree and before beginning Part 2.
About

The Bartlett provides a twelve month course to support you whilst working in practice. It offers one-to-one career development advice and peer-to-peer support, as well as access to special events, networking opportunities as well as keeping you in touch with everything happening at The Bartlett.
The Year Out Programme/Stage 1 forms part of the minimum 7 years' education and experience including Part 3, leading to registration as an architect with the ARB and chartered status with the RIBA.
Work experience
The Year Out Programme is designed to complement students’ first experience of practice, providing early career support and a connection to The Bartlett and its network of leading practitioners and other professionals.
Course structure
The course consists of:
- Four to six early evening events, including networking, peer-to-peer support, talks and practice visits
- Four Professional Education and Development Records – quarterly record sheets documenting students' work experience signed off
- Manifesto Project – supported research project about students' future practice
- Bartlett events – invitations to lectures, exhibition openings and alumni events
- Access to a Professional Studies Advisor who can offer one-to-one advice and support during the year
The certificate is awarded with four completed PEDRs, the Manifesto Project and attendance at a number of Year Out events.
PEDR Quarterly Records
As a post-Part 1 student you need to register with the RIBA to use the PEDR system. In order to complete the PEDR you must be registered with a School of Architecture.
PEDRs record your work experience over a three month period and are completed in collaboration with your practice mentor/supervisor. They are submitted to the Professional Studies Advisor (PSA) for comment and signing. You can also complete your Year Out in an associated, approved field including planning, construction, development, landscape or placemaking.
How to apply
The course is open to Part 1 graduates from all UK or international universities, and early enrolment is strongly advised.
To register, please fill in the application form and pay the accompanying fee.
Once registered with a school of architecture, candidates will also need to register with the RIBA to complete their PEDRs.
Applicants should note that The Bartlett Year Out course is a professional course, not an academic programme, and does not confer UCL student status.
Fees
Once employment has been secured, the Stage 1 2022-23 fee of £300 can be paid via the UCL online store. There is no extra fee for the second year.
