Programme overview

In architecture, research and practice go hand in hand, with ground-breaking design inspiring great research and vice versa. This programme allows students to develop their own research and/or design to an advanced level, ready to push new boundaries and change normalised modes of working either in academia or industry. Many students on this programme work with their tutors to clarify a PhD proposal.

Students must attend lectures and seminars in Term One. Students may submit their Research - and thus complete the programme - after 3, 12 or 24 months.

Note on fees: The tuition fees shown are for the year indicated above. Fees for flexible, modular study are charged pro-rata to the appropriate full-time Master's fee taken in an academic session. Fee deposit: All students are required to pay a fee deposit of £1,000 for this programme.

Entry requirements

The normal minimum qualifications are a Master’s degree in architecture from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, or an equivalent professional architecture or design qualification.

English language requirements

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

Pre-Master's and Pre-sessional English

UCL Pre-Master's and Pre-sessional English courses are for international students who are aiming to study for a postgraduate degree at UCL. The courses will develop your academic English and academic skills required to succeed at postgraduate level. International Preparation Courses

About this degree

The Architectural Research PG Cert is designed to help students take their individual work to a higher level of design and/or theoretical development. This could materialise in the form of new physical or drawn work that strengthens the individual portfolio, or in the form of a personal exhibition, or as a written piece that extends an earlier piece of writing to become a conference paper or journal article.

Students undertake one module to the value of 60 credits.

The programme consists of one core module.

Upon successful completion of 60 credits, you will be awarded a PG Cert in Advanced Architectural Research.

Teaching and learning

Students are allocated to an individual Personal Tutor who works with them to define an appropriate mode of research and submission. Students are encouraged to attend open lectures and crits.

Who can apply?

This programme provides an ideal framework for those students who are thinking of taking a PhD and need help in formulating their research question. Candidates will be allocated an appropriate personal tutor to guide them closely in their work.

When we assess your application we would like to learn:

Together with essential academic requirements, the personal statement is your opportunity to illustrate whether your reasons for applying to this programme match what the programme will deliver.

Tier 4 Student Visa holders are advised to meet the English language proficiency of their offer no later than the end of June, in order to allow sufficient time to obtain a CAS number and visa.

To accept your offer, you must pay the non-refundable fee deposit within 6 weeks and decline any other offers for programmes at the Bartlett School of Architecture. If you do not respond within 6 weeks, your offer will be withdrawn.

Please note that the School of Architecture does not allow deferred entry to any of its postgraduate programmes. If you have an offer of admission but cannot take it up, you will not be able to defer it and will have to apply again for entry the following year.
