Enhancing the User Experience of Sustainable-Themed Exhibitions Through XR Video Games

First and second supervisors

Abstract

Digital technology enables innovative presentation of exhibitions in both real and virtual spaces, enhancing accessibility and interaction by eliminating physical barriers. This democratization of art allows audiences to engage with exhibitions online or offline, fostering wider participation and discussion among artists and enthusiasts alike, and ensuring deeper appreciation and understanding. During the pandemic, virtual galleries played a crucial role in sustaining art engagement, highlighting the value of digital solutions.

Since the United Nations introduced the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, global attention has focused on promoting sustainability across sectors. Yet, on an individual level, awareness of sustainable practices remains limited. Education through immersive and interactive exhibitions is effective in bridging this knowledge gap, capturing public interest, and encouraging active participation in sustainable practices.

Extended Reality (XR) technology, encompassing VR, AR, and MR, has advanced exhibition experiences, yet its use in sustainability-themed exhibitions is still rare. This study proposes employing XR technology in a user-centered design framework to create engaging, educational video game interfaces for sustainability-themed exhibitions. By prioritizing user feedback and applying iterative design, the project aims to develop immersive and accessible XR video games that enhance visitor experience and understanding of sustainability.
