Three Architecture BSc students from The Bartlett School of Architecture – Tomiwa Balogun, Dominic Coles Saffirio and Kenny Lau – have been honoured at the 2024 RIBA London Student Awards. The awards celebrate excellence and emerging talent in architectural education across 12 universities and colleges in London.

The students received recognition for their projects during a ceremony held at RIBA’s headquarters, 66 Portland Place. The event brought together staff and students from various architecture programmes, with a distinguished jury panel evaluating the entries. Judges included Filip Žerjavić, Mike Oades, Paul Tierney, Steve Harvey, Joseph Faycal, Abubokkar Siddiki, Susan Harvey, Alex Clough and Juliet Quintero.

Dominic Coles Saffirio was recognised for his project, ‘Smithfield Fleshworks’ which revives leathercraft in London by integrating sustainable, bacteria-based leather production with traditional tanning techniques in a public, interactive workspace.

Kenny Lau was recognised for his project, ‘The Farringdon Filmhouse’ – a combined cinema and post-production studio that immerses visitors in the filmmaking process by revealing typically hidden stages of film production through interactive architectural elements.

Tomiwa Balogun was recognised in the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) category. The awards were introduced in 2023 to celebrate DEI-focused projects and are sponsored by Vandersanden. Her project, ‘The Sanctuary of Sound’ concentrates on creating inclusive environments and has been designed specifically with neurodiverse young people in mind.

The work of all three students can be viewed online on the Summer Show 2024 website within the first-year project space.
