Mark Smout and Laura Allen, Senior Lecturers at The Bartlett School of Architecture and Founders of architecture practice Smout Allen, join UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design (CED) this autumn as Howard A. Friedman Visiting Associate Professors in Practice of Architecture.

The professorship is supported by the Howard A. Friedman Visiting Professorship in the Practice of Architecture Fund. To celebrate Professor Friedman's commitment to the University of California and his contributions to the architectural profession, his wife Phyllis Friedman established the fund. Since 1991, income from the fund has brought distinguished practitioners of architecture to teach at the College of Environmental Design. Holders of the visiting professorship teach and counsel students and enhance the liaison between the college and the profession.

Smout and Allen's work takes two routes: architectural competitions, where the particular riguor of the competition brief, site, and programme provide the basis for new investigations, and conceptual design projects which test out the agenda and methodology of the design research practice. The pair focus on the dynamic relationship between the natural and the man made and how this can be revealed to enhance the experience of the architectural landscape.

On 5 November Mark Smout and Laura Allen will discuss their work and practice as part of the Fall 2014 Architecture Lecture Series at CED UC Berkeley.
