Matter and Sound: Making a functional loudspeaker

by Robin Mather

Part one: A broad and uninhibited exploration of various materials and structures that could contribute to the project goals. This results in a novel, low-mass support structure with low axial stiffness but high radial stiffness. Materials and fabrication techniques of various elements were tested and these are combined in the first proof of concept speaker.

Part two: A modular system was built to allow for systematic investigation of the effect of varying each parameter. An enclosed cabinet allows for the pressure variations at the back of the moving cone to be effectively managed. The measurements, a work in progress, are both objective and subjective.

This exhibition is part of The Bartlett Kiosk series showcasing B-made makers.

Robin Mather currently manages the B-made workshop at 22 Gordon Street, where he enjoys testing and evolving his fabrication skills with various personal projects. Before joining The Bartlett, Robin had a career designing and building bespoke bicycle frames and the tools for their manufacture. Robin has won multiple awards at the UK Handmade Bicycle Show and is a QEST scholar. He has exhibited work at the Design Museum and Buckingham Palace.
