About
Isabelle Doucet’s short essay ‘Anticipating Fabulous Futures’ serves as the catalyst for this workshop, which seeks to examine good precedents in pedagogy and practice and from them shape a set of questions for The Bartlett to explore in the coming years. We will build upon what Doucet calls, following Isabelle Stengers, our ‘resonance chamber.’ “Architecture,” she writes, “when at its most daring and imaginative in its capacity to respond and be responsible, can act as […] a resonance chamber. Architects can offer possibilities and interpretations, stories (real and imagined) of how we can connect differently, how we can resist collaboratively, and how we can challenge the promises of growth, progress, and development that are otherwise considered part and parcel of any architectural brief.”
This workshop seeks to begin to rewrite multiple briefs by bringing the tools of history and theory to the three other primary streams of education in the architectures; technology, design, and (professional) practice. Workshoppers will examine these three streams to identify the hallmarks and characteristics of the cultures we are growing out of (both ‘rooted in’ and ‘maturing away from’). The workshop is limited to 36 participants—first come, first served. Please sign up especially if you have a particular interest in the history and/or theory of technology, design, and/or (professional) practice.
There will be a drinks reception afterwards in the foyer of The Bartlett Summer Show at 22 Gordon Street, WC1H 0BQ.
