The Spatial and Social Configuration of Elderly Care Facilities in the Community

Xiaoming Li discusses his PhD research, which aims to develop a network-based framework to uncover cross-scale socio-spatial relationships, and discusses the preliminary findings of a pilot study. Focussing on the ageing global population, Xiaoming explores community-based elderly care facilities (CECF) in a Chinese urban context, investigating how social interaction patterns of elderly care residents are shaped by spatial networks of both architectural layouts and urban fabrics where the facilities are located.

Biography

Xiaoming Li is a PhD candidate in The Bartlett’s Space Syntax Laboratory, fully sponsored by China Scholarship Council (CSC). He received his BArch and MArch from Xi'an Jiaotong University (2015) and Southeast University (2018) respectively. Xiaoming is interested in using quantitative methods to investigate interactions between spatial and social networks in a range of architectural and urban environments.
