Bored Clouds Tickled by Frightened Tornadoes

This exhibition celebrations a long-distance collaboration between Nat Chard and Perry Kulper, which has spanned over a decade. Both understand and respect the traditional motivations for architecture but are suspicious of the way that these can be used in a reductive manner, based on information and observations that are easy to calibrate or have the appearance of certainty. 

Nat and Perry explore the 'less graspable' aspects of architecture through the way they make their work – Perry concentrating on the ways that the tactics and strategies he uses can charge his drawings while Nat practices these ambitions through the construction of didactic drawing instruments. The influence of the conversation can be seen in each of their work; they have also worked on collaborative pieces, some of which are included in this exhibition.

The works on show include drawings, drawing instruments and objects. Most are studies that tease out new territories for their authors, each time bringing them into contact with less certain and more tantalising architectural possibilities.

Biographies

Nat Chard is Professor of Experimental Architecture at The Bartlett and has also held professorships at the Royal Danish Academy, Copenhagen, University of Manitoba and the University of Brighton. He taught at The Bartlett throughout the ’90s along with studios at the University of East London and the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University). 

Perry Kulper is an architect and Associate Professor at the University of Michigan. He previously taught at SCI-Arc for 17 years. After graduate studies at Columbia University he worked with Eisenman/Robertson, Robert A.M. Stern and Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown before constructing his own practice.

In addition to their many individual exhibitions and publications, Nat and Perry have jointly authored Pamphlet Architecture No. 34, Fathoming the Unfathomable and exhibited Unreliable Sightings of at the Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They are currently working on a book to be published by UCL Press.
