City Space for Sojourn: Towards a Novel Multi-Sensory Framework for the Design and Analysis of Urban Media Art Installation

First and second supervisors

Abstract

The increasing deployment of urban media art installations influences how people feel stimulated to come, linger, and stay, defining the sojourn quality of city spaces. At the same time, a multi-sensory approach has been demonstrated to enhance the quality of sojourn with a user-centered consideration.

To date, established frameworks often concentrate on the role of interactive behaviors generated by the installation in urban spaces, but rarely delve into individuals' sensory perception. On the other hand, although a limited number of studies have addressed the sensory aspect, they have mostly focused on mono- or dual-sensory experiences, predominantly visual. Therefore, there is a need to (re)examine the designs through multi-sensory analysis and practice and challenge the recent “visualism” of media installations.

This study aims to develop a multi-sensory approach to support the design and analysis of urban media art installations with regard to facilitating the sojourn quality of city spaces. It will focus on the non-visual senses including hearing, smell and touch, and explore how these senses can be composed and interrelated. It will deliver a consistent theoretical framework and methodological insights, and more importantly, attempt to provide a new perspective that incorporates the emerging trends in academic research on urban human-computer interaction and urban design.
