Research summary

I specialise in the histories of architectural print cultures and visual perception since the 17th century. As postdoc on the project The Printed and the Built at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (https://theprintedandthebuilt.wordpress.com), I have recently undertaken research into the role that architecture played in mid-19th century British periodicals, with a specific focus on the Illustrated London News as well as the emerging genre of the architectural magazine.

I have published broadly on architectural writing, perception and knowledge production since the early modern period up to the early 20th century. In 2014, I have set up the interest group ‘Building Word Image’ within the European Architectural History Network bringing together scholars working on verbal and visual representations of building and cities. I am a member of Mapping.Crit.Arch: Architectural Criticism 20th and 21st Centuries, a research network funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche.

I have co-edited The Printed and the Built: Architecture, Print Culture, and Public Debate in the Nineteenth Century (2018) as well as Building Word Image: Printing Architecture 1800-1950, a Special Collection of Architectural Histories, the EAHN Journal (2016). My book Architecture, Travellers and Writers: Constructing Histories of Perception 1640-1950 (2014) explores how the ways in which buildings are looked at, and made sense of, change over the course of time. By looking at a selection of travel writings spanning four centuries, it proposes that it is language, the description of architecture, which offers clues about the historical development of perception. Texts investigated include, among others, the first edition of Nikolaus Pevsner’s Buildings of England, an 1855 art guide by Swiss art historian Jacob Burckhardt, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719) as well as the 17th-century diary of John Evelyn.

Teaching summary

In my teaching, I emphasise the link between the history and theory of architecture and its material object, the built in the widest sense. On the other hand, I always build on the idea of a cognitive history of architecture that takes into account the whole social, cultural and material context in which people of the past have designed, used and critiqued architecture. Including site visits to buildings, open spaces as well as archives and exhibitions whenever possible, I have taught at the The Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL), the School of History, Queen Mary University of London, as well as The Oslo School of Architecture. I have a decade of teaching experience on undergraduate and postgraduate level, including dissertation supervision. Subjects taught include a wide range of topics, besides the traditional survey course, such as 

  • architectural print cultures; 
  • the history of vision and perception; 
  • architectural description; 
  • women in architecture; 
  • architecture, travel and the Grand Tour; 
  • architecture in the 18th-century novel; 
  • routes and circuits in the landscape garden;
  • concepts of metaphor, semiology and architecture; 
  • the history of curiosity, 17th-century natural history and architecture; 
  • architecture and early photography; 
  • modern concepts of space, 
  • architecture and war, in particular the London Blitz.

An architect and architectural historian by training, I am currently a Senior Teaching Fellow at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, where I have taught since 2007 and completed both my PhD (2011) and the MSc in Architectural History (2006). I am also a Part-time Lecturer at New York University London, where I teach the history of London’s architecture. Between 2014 and 2018, I have been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Oslo School for Architecture and Design where my research focused on the representation of architecture in the 19th-century illustrated press and the emergence of the architectural magazine. 

Author of Architecture, Travellers and Writers: Constructing Histories of Perception 1640-1950(Legenda, 2014), I have contributed to a number of journals and edited books on topics such as architecture in the early illustrated newspaper, Nikolaus Pevsner and the Architectural Review, Jacob Burckhardt and early art history, 17th-century collections, John Evelyn, John Ruskin, or metaphor in architectural description. I am the co-editor, with Mari Hvattum, of The Printed and the Built: Architecture, Print Culture, and Public Debate in the Nineteenth Century(Bloomsbury, 2018) and of Building Word Image: Printing Architecture 1800-1950, a special collection of Architectural Histories(with Catalina Mejía Moreno, 2016). 

I am the Communications Officer of the European Architectural History Network (EAHN) and a General Editor of its open-access journal, Architectural Histories. Since 2014, I have co-convened Building Word Image, an interest group within the EAHN.
