WANTED: Effective management of water resources
10 May 2013
25 March 2013
Water is abundantly found on the Earth’s surface, though only a small percentage of it is accessible freshwater. Its dynamic nature and direct influence on human health and the climate creates a challenge requiring collaboration of scientists, economists, sociologists, policy makers and educators. UN-water aims to realise this through this year’s theme on International Year of Water Cooperation; it is now clear to everyone that we all drink from the same cup.
Water resources management is a vital key for humans in issues such as food and energy security. Technological advances have had a positive impact in improving water supply, however nearly one billion people still remain without fresh water.
This is neither a simple, nor a local issue. Many river basins and aquifers cross national boundaries, water is internationally traded and the water’s cycle has a large influence on climate change, which disproportionally impacts some locations – like Australia. Current increased and unregulated demand for water require governance institutions to provide frameworks at local, national and regional level, as well as governance of the global process.
UCL Australia is evaluating these underlying global issues is order to uncover new and more effective water solutions.
UCL Australia also offers a Water Resources Management course, which is part of the MSc in Energy and Resources Management. The course is led by Dr Eleftheria Polykarpou who also teaches Energy Efficiency and Conservation in the MSc programme.
