Life in Sweden

Northern Folk

SamiSweden is a huge country, about twice the size of the UK, stretching far beyond the Arctic Circle. The north of the country is home to the native Sámi (who used to be known as “Lapps”). Traditionally, reindeer herding was an important part of Sámi lifestyle.

Nature is very important to the Sámi. The green and yellow in the flag symbolise the forests, the blue symbolises the moon and the red symbolises the sun. The circle also represents the sun and the moon

The Sámi traditional clothing is called gákti. The Sámi colours of green, yellow, blue and red are used for Gákti. Nowadays it is mainly worn on special occasions such as weddings.
