Portuguese Events in the UK

Even without travelling to Portugal, you can still sample lots of Portuguese culture here in the UK. There are events organised by the Portuguese Embassy in London and listed on its website >>

One of the major events organised recently was Atlantic Waves 2003 - Exploratory Music from Portugal. This was the largest festival of Portuguese music ever held in London, and the largest outside Portugal itself. Many famous musicians took part in the festival, and a huge variety of music was on offer, ranging from contemporary fado to experimental electronica. You can find out more at the Atlantic Waves website www.atlanticwaves.org.uk

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

Who was Calouste Gulbenkian?

Gulbenkian lived from 1869-1955 and was an immensely wealthy industrialist who amassed a fortune in the early years of the 20th century from the oil industry and stock markets. But he spent this money on collecting works of art, and left his vast collection to the Lisbon public after his death. Although he was not born in Portugal, Gulbenkian had made his home there in the latter stages of his life. A Foundation was also set up after he died to fund cultural, scientific and educational projects all over the world. It has a branch in London which offers funding to projects here in the UK and in Ireland, as well as providing a range of cultural events throughout the year.
