Getting Started

Welcome to ATLAS! As you may have gathered, this website contains 'taster' courses in several languages. The courses have been designed by the team to give you a flavour of what it might be like to study a new language and even visit the countries in which these languages are spoken.

To make it easy to use the site, we have kept the same structure for all our pages. This means that you can use the menu on the left hand side to get around the main areas of the site at any time.

Once you are within a language, you will also have a menu at the top of the screen underneath the main heading. This will help you to get around that taster.

Printing

Although these language tasters have not been designed for use as written exercises, you can print them off if you wish. The pages are designed to print with a different style to that shown on the page, leaving out any features which are only useful on the screen.

Simply use the 'Print' tools in your web browser and the print-friendly version of the page will be produced.

Sounds

Some pages on the ATLAS website may require sounds to be played as part of the learning experience.

In order to hear these sounds your computer should be equipped with at least the following:

  • An installed sound card device for playing the sounds.
  • A suitable listening device in the form of headphones and/or speakers.

Media Players and other software Plug-ins

Certain pages and exercises in ATLAS also require specific software to be installed on your computer in order for you to hear sounds, view movies or interact with games and animations. The following is a list of such software currently used within ATLAS.

(Note: The computer platforms are shown in brackets.)

  • Flash Player (Mac/PC)
  • Windows Media Player (PC)
  • QuickTime (Mac/PC)
