Research Fellowships, 2022

We are keen to support a limited number of strong candidates in applying for Research Fellowships. If your profile and interests match our activities, we would be very interested to hear from you.

Please ensure that you have read the sponsor's information and can meet the eligibility requirements before contacting us.

Potential applicants who wish to be hosted by the UCL Astrophysics Group for any of the below fellowship schemes should contact Professor Giovanna Tinetti (g.tinetti@ucl.ac.uk) and Mrs Kay Nakum (k.nakum@ucl.ac.uk), enclosing a draft 3-page research case and a CV/publication list. For most schemes, you need to send us these materials by the deadline of 1st of July 2022, and we will aim to get back to you within 20 days. However some deadlines vary. Please see below for important information about the individual schemes, and indicate clearly in your emails which scheme you are applying for.

After the material has been reviewed, we will let you know whether we are able to support your application as the prospective host institution. We will provide feedback to help further strengthen applications that we are putting forward, in good time for revisions to be made before the relevant scheme deadline.

Please also note for applications that we are progressing, our internal deadline for the receipt of completed UCL costing forms for applications is four weeks ahead of the funder deadlines - the UCL forms that need to be completed can be obtained from Mrs Kay Nakum, (k.nakum@ucl.ac.uk).

Some guidelines for applicants can be found here - https://www.ucl.ac.uk/physics-astronomy/research/research-fellowships/fellowship-application-guidelines-202223

Royal Society - University Research Fellowship:

Please send materials for our internal consideration as detailed at the top of this page, by 1st July. The funder deadline for applications for the University Research Fellowship is 3pm, September 06th 2022. More information can be found here: University Research Fellowship | Royal Society

Royal Society - Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship:

Please send materials for our internal consideration as detailed at the top of this page, but by the later deadline of 9th September 2022. The funder deadline for applications for the Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship is 3pm, November 01st 2022.

STFC - Ernest Rutherford Fellowship:

Please send materials for our internal consideration as detailed at the top of this page, by 1st July. The deadline for applications for the Ernest Rutherford Fellowships scheme last year was 4pm, 16th September, we expect it to be around the same date this year too. Each host institution is given an internal quota limit by STFC for ERF applicants and so must have a process to select applicants to meet their quota limit.

STFC encourages returners to research and our quota limit will not apply to any applications from candidates who are intending to return to research from a career break (normally of at least two years). Ernest Rutherford Fellowship applications from returners may be submitted in excess of the departmental limit. Returner applications will be judged solely on the applicant’s track record prior to their career break. Please inform us if you fit within this category.

PLEASE NOTE: STFC stated that in the most recent Ernest Rutherford Fellowships round, 41% of proposals had to be returned for amendment because they breached the rules on page limits, font size etc.  Following advice from the Education, Training and Careers Committee, which advises STFC on the fellowships process, they are planning to adopt a stricter approach in the future.  From the next round, they intend to reject proposals that do not follow the application rules, without the possibility of amendment.  The only exception would be where a problem occurred because of issues in downloading the proposal into Research Council systems.)

More information can be found here: Ernest Rutherford Fellowship - Science and Technology Facilities Council (ukri.org)

UKRI - Future Leaders Fellowship:

Internal deadline is currently being decided upon, it will be posted here once it has been confirmed.  You should then send materials for our internal consideration as detailed at the top of this page. The 2021 closing date for outline proposals was early December, and we expect it to be around the same time this year too. More information can be found here: Future Leaders Fellowships – UKRI

Stephen Hawking Fellowship:

We are awaiting news of this fellowship, once information has been obtained it will be posted here.

European Commision - Marie Curie Fellowship:

The call for proposals is expected to open in June 2022 with a deadline in October 2022.
