Dr Wendy Sims-Schouten

Dr Wendy Sims-Schouten is Deputy Director of Arts & Sciences and Associate Professor.  She is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Wendy has a specific interest in interdisciplinary research (historic and contemporary) with a focus on wellbeing, eclectic resilience (including resistance and defiance) and coproduction and has researched (and published) in the areas of mental health, safeguarding and inclusive practice with members from disadvantaged, displaced and marginalised communities (such as young care leavers, homeless people, as well as children/young people from ethnic minority communities), in national and international contexts (England, Scotland, Netherlands, Egypt, Canada, Indonesia). She has also researched issues around bullying and childhood obesity, as well as mental health literacy. Her work has been funded by the Wellcome Trust, Research England, NIHR, as well as charities and Portsmouth City Council. Wendy is Chair of Editorial Board for the international and interdisciplinary journal Children & Society, Co-Editor of the British Psychological Society Journal “Psychology Teaching Review” and member of Editorial Committee for the Journal of Critical Realism.

PhD

Wendy is available for PhD supervision in the following areas:

  • Historic and contemporary practices around mental health, wellbeing and safeguarding of marginalised/disadvantaged groups, including child refugees/migrants, young care leavers, homeless people and children/young people from ethnic minority communities, in national and international contexts.
  • Mental Health and wellbeing in HE.
  • Qualitative Research that centralises voices, coproduction, sensory ethnography and visual methods in research with members from marginalised and disadvantaged communities.

Teaching

Wendy is BASC0015 Psychology in the Real World and co-module convenor for BASC0024 Final Year Dissertation and BASC0053 Approaches to Interdisciplinarity.
