UCL Philosophy Department Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PGTAs) 2026
The UCL Philosophy Department seeks to appoint a number of Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PGTAs) for the 2026–27 academic session to support teaching on various undergraduate taught modules.
The main duties of the role include:
- leading seminar classes;
- marking coursework and examinations in a timely manner; and
- providing detailed written feedback on coursework assignments and essays.
Successful candidates will normally be pursuing a postgraduate research degree, preferably within the UCL Philosophy Department, or will have studied a closely related subject. Previous teaching experience is desirable but not essential.
Appointments will be made at Grade 6, Spine Point 23 of the UCL salary scale (currently £19.59 per hour including London Allowance).
PGTAs will be paid for:
- mandatory training;
- meetings with the Course Convenor or Module Lead;
- lecture attendance;
- seminar preparation and teaching;
- marking formative and summative assessments.
Marking payments are calculated according to the type and number of assessments marked. Weekly pay will vary depending on the number of seminar groups taught and assessments marked. Holiday pay is paid in addition, and payments are processed one month in arrears.
As an example, a PGTA taking two seminar groups for an introductory/intermediate level module could expect to be paid for around 81 hours of teaching, training, preparation, etc. plus for around 16-24 hours of marking (depending on the number of papers or scripts marked, and their length) for the whole module, plus holiday pay.
