Last week, UCL Arts & Humanities was delighted to welcome new students with a series of events organised by the Faculty Education and Student Experience team. Designed to help students settle in, make connections, and feel part of the faculty community, our events brought together a mix of Q&A style events and light-hearted activities.
The week began with a Student to Student Welcome, giving new arrivals the chance to hear directly from current students about life at UCL and in London. This peer-led event encouraged questions to our panel of three students: Heddwen Campbell (Fine Art BA), Francis Deng, (Politics, Sociology and East European studies BA) and Arabella Garcia Hollmann (Ancient World BA). We also offered a range of activities for students to engage with each other and think about their future at UCL, including Bingo, letters to my future self and writing wishes and affirmations for the future.
Students also had the opportunity to meet faculty professional services staff during our Faculty lunch event, creating space for informal conversations and a chance to learn more about the support available throughout their studies.
A highlight of the week was the International Student Welcome, where students from around the world gathered to celebrate the start of their time at UCL. Alongside plenty of classic British snacks, attendees were joined by a rather unexpected guest: a life-sized cardboard cut-out of a royal visitor, which provided both a talking point and a photo opportunity. The event included a Q&A with a panel of our Teaching and Learning Directors, Dr Rachel Morley (SSEES), Dr Marjorie Huet (SELCS) and Dr Xine Yao (English).
As teaching begins, the faculty team looks forward to building on this strong start, supporting students throughout the year, and seeing them thrive both academically and socially.
