Politics and Sociology (Undergraduate Programmes)
Our degree programmes combine training in politics, international relations and sociology with specialist modules on Russia and Eastern Europe.
We provide graduates with the skills to analyse contemporary issues in European and international politics and society, which results in a wide range of careers.
We host the popular Post-Soviet Press Group, which meets weekly to discuss emerging events in the region and covers a vast array of topics, often student-led, and with opportunities to research and report back on your own areas of interest. Our SSEESing Now series gives expert analysis on stories from the region as they develop.
Our graduates can be found globally, as the skills acquired combined with area-specific knowledge places you in a unique position to work in areas such as policy-making, diplomacy, media and journalism, NGOs and think-tanks and academia. Close relationships with organisations such as Chatham House, embassies and the FCO facilitate our careers evenings that are hosted at the School.
For guidance on the programme structure, please see the Programme Handbook (please note the handbook is for current students and so the structure may change somewhat from year to year.) You can view the module descriptions by clicking on the titles which will take you through to the UCL Module Catalogue.

Studying at UCL/SSEES gave me two things that made a real difference early on: the ability to break down complex geopolitical issues quickly, and the discipline to back every claim with solid evidence. That combination made me useful fast - especially in roles where you’re expected to make sense of messy information and turn it into something decision-ready. It meant I could walk into my first job already thinking like an analyst rather than a graduate.

Read Beth's testimonial"I decided to study at SSEES because it’s a world-leading institute specialising in researching the intertwined contexts of Eastern, Southeastern Europe, and Middle Asia. I was deeply drawn to how highly regarded SSEES is for its research on this region and to its significant role in policy and activism on real-life issues."
