Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?
I chose to study at UCL because it is one of the world’s leading universities with a strong international reputation. Within UCL, SSEES stood out to me for its long history and unique focus on the social sciences, economics, and cultures of Central and Eastern Europe. I was drawn to the department’s interdisciplinary approach and the opportunity to study in such a diverse and intellectually stimulating environment.
What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?
I am currently studying for an MA in Comparative Business Economics at SSEES. During my undergraduate studies in Economics, I developed a strong interest in understanding how different economic systems operate across countries. This programme particularly appealed to me because it combines economic theory with real-world comparative perspectives, allowing me to deepen my knowledge and apply it in a global context.
How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?
My course is going really well. So far, my favourite module is Russian language, which I chose as an optional subject. I find it incredibly interesting and enjoyable to learn — it not only challenges me linguistically but also helps me better understand the culture and context of the region we study at SSEES.
How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?
The academic staff at SSEES are extremely friendly, approachable, and supportive. They are always willing to offer guidance, both academically and personally. Every student is also assigned a personal tutor, which provides an additional layer of support — someone we can turn to for advice or help whenever needed.
What about the social life?
Social life at UCL is vibrant and full of opportunities. With hundreds of student societies to choose from, it’s easy to find communities that match your interests. SSEES also organizes a range of engaging events and seminars that not only enhance our learning experience but also help us connect with other students and staff across the department.
What are your future plans/aspirations?
In the future, I hope to work in a field related to economics, possibly within international business or policy analysis. My goal is to gain practical experience, explore different career paths, and eventually find an area that truly suits my skills and interests.
Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?
I would strongly encourage anyone interested in this programme to apply! It is a challenging but very rewarding one-year course. Time management is key, but as long as you plan your work carefully, you will enjoy it. SSEES offers so many opportunities — academically, professionally, and socially — so make sure to explore them all and enjoy the experience!
