Sabrina Garabagiu is in the first year of her BA Economics and Business with East European Studies degree.
Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?
As someone who is ethnically Moldovan, I have always been interested in the economic and social developments that have shaped Eastern Europe. I wanted to study economics and business in a context that reflects the region’s complexity and transition. UCL SSEES stood out for its academic excellence and its specialist focus on Central and Eastern Europe. Studying at a leading global university in London, surrounded by diverse perspectives and professional opportunities, has provided the ideal environment for both personal and academic growth.
What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?
I am studying Economics and Business with East European Studies. I developed a strong interest in economics during my A levels, where I enjoyed learning how theory can explain real-world decisions and policies. This course appealed to me because it combines analytical economics with a practical understanding of business, while also offering insights into the economies and societies of Eastern Europe. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree keeps it stimulating and relevant, allowing me to explore both quantitative and contextual aspects of the subject.
How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?
The course is going very well. I have particularly enjoyed Microeconomics, as it challenges the way I think about decision-making and market behaviour, and International Business, which examines how firms operate within a global context. Both modules have helped me understand how economic theory applies to real situations, and I find the combination of analytical study and real-world relevance particularly rewarding.
How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?
The academic staff at SSEES are highly knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely dedicated to their students. They explain complex material clearly and always make time for questions or further discussion. The support offered by the department has been excellent, both academically and personally. It is a very encouraging environment that motivates you to work hard and engage deeply with your studies.
What about the social life?
SSEES has a very strong sense of community. Because the department is relatively small, it is easy to get to know your peers and feel part of a close academic group. There are regular events, talks, and student-led activities that make it easy to meet people and get involved. Being at UCL also provides access to a wide range of societies and opportunities across the wider university, alongside everything that London itself has to offer.
What are your future plans/aspirations?
I am interested in pursuing a career in finance, as I enjoy the combination of analytical work, problem-solving, and strategic thinking. Through internships and insight programmes, I have been able to explore different areas of the field, and I am continuing to refine my interests. In the long term, I hope to build a career in an international setting where I can apply the economic and business insights I have developed at SSEES to real-world challenges.
Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?
I would advise future students to approach this course with curiosity and an open mind. It is a rigorous and varied degree that gives you a strong grounding in economics and business while also allowing you to study a fascinating region from multiple perspectives. The course encourages you to think critically, engage with new ideas, and develop valuable skills for a wide range of careers. If you are genuinely interested in understanding how economies and businesses evolve in a global context, SSEES is an excellent place to study.
