The SSEES Alumni Association was inaugurated by Professor Emeritus Faith Wigzell in 2011. Over the following years we held semi-annual get-togethers at Taviton Street - a mixture of thought-provoking talks kindly given by SSEES lecturers and cultural events like the theatre or art galleries. One year we held an Eastern European Food & Drink event at SSEES which proved very popular!
2015 marked the centenary of the foundation of SSEES. A large range of activities took place, including a grand alumni dinner and a fundraising effort to support our current students with scholarships.
The pandemic curtailed our activities, and it was barely over before the world was hit by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We reacted in two ways: we held an event with our Ukraine expert, Professor Andrew Wilson, on the situation in Russia which had led to the invasion; and when the National Ballet of Ukraine came to London, we organised a visit to see The Firebird.
Since then, we’ve held a number of meetings on the current state of our region, on illiberalism in Central Europe, on the perspectives for Moldova in Europe, on technology in Eastern Europe and, to mark the centenary of Lenin’s death, on the attitude towards him in Russia today. Nor have we neglected our cultural and historical roots, with meetings on Dostoevskii and on the German exiles of East-Central Europe.
The Alumni Association works closely with the School's career's tutor, Dr Pawel Bukowski, to provide advice and help between the alumni and with current students. Alumni who would like to participate in the careers talks or become mentors are always very welcome to get in touch.
We love hearing from former students, so please feel free to contact us at ssees-events@ucl.ac.uk
We hope to see you at an alumni event in the not too distant future!
