Graduate taught degrees

UCL Philosophy offers three taught master’s degrees: MA Philosophy, MA Philosophy, Public Policy and Social Change, and MASc Philosophy, Logic, and Artificial Intelligence. The latter is new for 2026 entry and examines the intersections of philosophy, logic, and AI.

These degrees are full-time for one year, or part-time over two years.

MA Philosophy

The MA Philosophy allows our students to develop core philosophical skills in: argumentation, critical reading, and clear and precise philosophical writing. Students will develop an understanding of a range of central philosophical debates, but will also be able to explore their own interests through a diverse range of options. 

This degree is suitable for those with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines.

Philosophy graduates who wish to develop an academic career in Philosophy, and meet the entry requirements, are advised to apply for the two-year MPhil Stud Philosophical Studies.

MA Philosophy, Public Policy and Social Change

The MA Philosophy, Public Policy and Social Change is theoretically rigorous yet practical. It focuses on how philosophy can help us to be more reflective, ethical and effective in the design of public policies. 

Students will develop an understanding of a range of central philosophical debates, but will also be able to explore their own interests through a diverse range of options. 

This degree is suitable for those with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines. Philosophy graduates who wish to develop an academic career in Philosophy, and meet the entry requirements, are advised to apply for the two-year MPhil Stud Philosophical Studies.

MASc Philosophy, Logic, and Artificial Intelligence 

The MASc Philosophy, Logic, and Artificial Intelligence examines the very idea of reasoning, and its philosophical foundations, from the perspectives of Logic and Artificial Intelligence. 

Students will study a rigorous selection of modules which will stimulate advanced philosophical and critical thinking, alongside developing deep technical understanding.

This degree is suitable for those with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines, but requires both logico-mathematical and philosophical aptitude.
