  • BASEES Awards Honour Academic Excellence in Slavonic Studies

We are proud to congratulate Stefan Lacny on winning the BASSES British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies (BASEES) Prize for the Best Scholarly Article by a Postgraduate Student, for his article, “Creating the Polish enemy on the Soviet Screen, 1925-1939”. Studies in Russian and soviet cinema. BASEES commented ‘Lacny’s article offers an impressively synthetic view of the representation of Polish people in Soviet film prior to World War II. Lacny balances depth and breadth admirably, offering insightful close readings of a range of films that are effectively incorporated into a much broader argument about the ideological function of depictions of Polish people in Soviet film in the period in question.’

We also warmly congratulate Dr Natalia V Parker on winning the BASEES’s Excellence in Teaching the Languages of Slavonic, East European and Eurasian Area Studies Prize. The award is for her contribution to the positive experience of students learning the said languages in higher education. The aim of this annual award is to recognise teachers of the languages of Slavonic , East European and Eurasian Area Studies in higher education, who have contributed to the positive experience of students learning the said languages in higher education. This could include implementing best practice to enhance student learning, bringing new pedagogical techniques to higher education institutions, developing new innovative teaching pedagogical theory, styles, practices, or methods, supporting student engagement or promoting language learning in the UK.

Both Stefan and Nastasha were presented with their awards at the International Council for Central and East European Studies World Congress , which is taking place at UCL 21-25 July
