Organised in partnership with the Sir Martin Gilbert Learning Centre.
The History Prize is open to UK students in Years 10 and 11 (England and Wales)/ S3 and S4 (Scotland)/ Years 11 and 12 (Northern Ireland). It is organised by the Sir Martin Gilbert Learning Centre and the Department of Hebrew & Jewish Studies at University College London.
We will award a First Prize of £400 and a Second Prize of £200, both of which will go directly to the students. The deadline for entries is 11.59pm on 28 February 2026.
The Prize encourages students to explore the rich history of Jews who have come to Britain over the past 1,000 years. It also aims to nurture historical skills, supporting students to develop a historical argument based on a range of primary and secondary sources.
To support the Prize we offer free workshops, led by UCL academics, on Jewish migration to Britain 1066-2025. This topic is linked to the GCSE Thematic Study on Migration but also resonates with a wide range of curricula.
Teachers can book sessions via the Sir Martin Gilbert Learning Centre bookings page.

Our work aims to increase knowledge of Jewish history in order to nuance public understanding of Jewish culture and to tackle antisemitism.
We believe it is important to educate the public not only about Jewish persecution but, perhaps more importantly, about who Jews are and how they have contributed to society.
