Provost contributes to UCL Arts & Humanities Community Cloth for UCL200

28 March 2025

UCL Arts & Humanities are creating a Community Cloth as an artefact for UCL's bicentenary, depicting 200 years of the faculty. Read more about how UCL's President and Provost and the Faculty Academic Leadership team contributed to the community stitch project.

On Thursday 27 March, the Arts & Humanities Community Cloth was set up in the Provost's Office on Bloomsbury Campus for a session of stitching with his team before several Deans from across UCL's eleven faculties joined to add their contributions.

UCL's President & Provost, Dr Michael Spence AC, was joined by Professor Stella Bruzzi, Executive Dean of UCL Arts & Humanities, along with Professor Alan Thompson (Brain Sciences), Professor Eloise Scotford (Laws), Professor Gail Taylor (Life Sciences), Professor Ivan Parkin (Mathematical and Physical Sciences) and Professor Li Wei (Institute of Education).

The project, led by the faculty's Wellbeing and Marketing & Communications teams, celebrates UCL Arts & Humanities and its rich history, which is reflected in the cloth’s striking family tree design of the faculty’s ten departments and marks the 200th anniversary in 2026 of UCL's foundation (UCL200). Following its launch in January, students and staff from across the faculty and UCL have stitched leaves, letters and designs on the cloth, with the UCL Leadership team now adding to this lasting UCL200 artefact.

Get involved

There will be more stitching sessions to come until the end of Term 3 - we would encourage anyone from the university to get involved and contribute stitches, even if you have no prior stitching experience. All are welcome to be a part of creating the cloth as a community ready for UCL200!

A series of stitching drop-in sessions will be scheduled - please keep checking the SharePoint page for more information.

Several departments have hosted the cloth in common rooms and shared spaces. If you're interested in hosting the cloth in your department, during student study sessions or UCLSU Student Society socials, please contact: ah-wellbeing@ucl.ac.uk

Let’s keep working together to create a fabulous lasting artefact for UCL200, that can be enjoyed by us and many future generations of staff and students.
