To mark 24 May - The Day of Cyril and Methodius, the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture, and Slavonic Literature - Dr Yordanka Velkova, associate lecturer in Bulgarian language and culture, was invited to deliver a talk on The Significance of the Cyrillic Alphabet and the Bulgarian Language at the UK Parliament (House of Commons). This event was organised by the Embassy of Bulgaria in London and the British All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG ) on Bulgaria.
As part of her presentation, Dr Velkova invited her students of Bulgarian, Edith Alun-Jones and Harvey Smith, to perform a joint recital of “March Ahead, O Revived People” - the iconic hymn of 24 May.
Edith and Harvey’s impressive recital drew warm praise from the organisers and guests, including H.E. Tihomir Stoichev, Ambassador of Bulgaria to the UK, James Asser MP, Chair of the APPG on Bulgaria, and Lord Philip Smith, Vice-Chair of the APPG (pictured). Ambassador Stoichev also warmly welcomed the students’ interest in gaining language experience in real diplomatic settings at the Embassy of Bulgaria in London.
