On 2 July, Ramona Gonczol attended a launch event at the UK Parliament as one of ten academics, entrepreneurs and community representatives founding ACORDUK, a new independent group of experts focused on the Romanian diaspora in the UK.
Ramona, an Associate Professor of Romanian Language at UCL SSEES and a recognised advocate for Romanian language education and bilingualism, represents ACORDUK’s Language and Culture Division.
During the event, ACORDUK launched its inaugural report, The Romanian Diaspora: Contributions to the British Economy and Society. Ramona authored Chapter 8, which examines the role of language, bilingualism and culture in supporting educational achievement, social integration and community cohesion.
Later that evening, the report was formally presented at the Romanian Consulate General in London. Both events were well attended, highlighting the growing recognition of the Romanian community’s contribution to British society.
Ramona continues to champion the introduction of a GCSE in Romanian as a recognised community language and to promote the significant educational, cultural and societal benefits of bilingualism for both the Romanian community and wider British society.
