On 29 October 2025, SSEES staff gathered in the Masaryk Common Room for the unveiling of a portrait of Dr Philippa Hetherington. The event offered a quiet moment of reflection and remembrance, honouring Philippa’s legacy and her lasting impact on our community. The portrait now stands as a tribute to her scholarship, warmth, and enduring presence at SSEES and UCL.
Philippa, who passed away in November 2022, was a historian and much-loved colleague, teacher and friend. In her memory, the School has launched the Dr Philippa Hetherington Memorial Fund, which aims to support SSEES PhD students through an award of a travel grant, to enable international research. The scholarship is open to applicants from the UK or Overseas. Any PhD student studying under a member of SSEES History staff is eligible to apply.
