On the 16th June, three prize-winning authors joined three literature and philosophy academics to reflect on the experience and representation of selfhood in the twenty-first century.
First, Prof. Clare Carlisle (KCL), Dr Eric Langley (UCL), and Prof. Tom Stern (UCL) gave a series of short, engaging talks on the subject of the self in philosophy, literature, and history.
Second, Rachel Cusk, Brian Dillon, and Vidyan Ravinthiran took part in a roundtable discussion of the self in their own works and in contemporary literature in general.
Organised to harness and illustrate the illuminating power of interdisciplinary thinking across the Humanities, ‘Literature in the Age of the Self’ marked the culmination of a year’s worth of conversations held under the auspices of the UCL Philosophy and Literature Reading Group.
