Who are we?
We are a small, friendly, enthusiastic department of staff and students from around the globe who aim to teach every aspect of Jewish culture to students of all backgrounds. Our experts specialise on a wide range of subjects from the modern Middle East (Seth Anziska) to ancient timekeeping (Sacha Stern) and in some cases have literally written the textbook (Lily Kahn Colloquial Yiddish)!
HJS People
HJS is a tight-knit community of academics from around the world, whose diverse research interests and teaching expertise create a vibrant intellectual atmosphere.
HJS History
UCL became the first university in England to admit Jews when it was founded in 1826. Both Hebrew language and Jewish Studies have been taught at UCL since day one.
What do we offer?
Our range of Jewish Studies courses is the widest anywhere in Europe, and we encourage our students to pursue their own interests and research.
We offer a variety of modules each term covering languages, history, literature and culture, and politics.
HJS Module List
Our offerings change year to year so you are sure to find plenty of modules to catch your interest!
Who studies here?
You do not have to be Jewish to study Hebrew and Jewish Studies! While some of our staff and students are Jewish (of every persuasion), a substantial minority are not.
Our students and staff make up a colourful international mix of people from all over the world.
Whatever your background, you are welcome.
What can I do with a degree from HJS?
Study in this field is more than becoming a Rabbi or academic.
Our degrees equip you with an incredible amount of knowledge in your subject area and transferrable skills that can be applied to a variety of careers. Many of our alumni work for government agencies, multinational corporations, and in the media, as well as within area specific cultural and academic institutions.
