A Grammar of Gaddi: Book launch and Discussion
Join us for an online discussion marking the official launch of A Grammar of Gaddi, a descriptive grammar of Gaddi, a Western Pahari Indo-Aryan language spoken in Himachal Pradesh and parts of Jammu.
This volume focuses on the Kangra dialect of the language and emerges from a multi-phase fieldwork conducted by former students and researchers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University. Drawing from primary data collected through long-term engagement with native speakers, the book aims to provide the first technical grammar of Gaddi across multiple linguistic levels: phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax.
About the Book and Its Contribution
This publication is part of an ongoing series by the UCL Press called Grammars of World and Minority Languages, which is dedicated to producing accessible, open-access grammatical descriptions of underrepresented and endangered languages worldwide.
The series is intended for a diverse audience: scholars, students, and the wider public, and is aimed at promoting the study and revitalisation of minority languages. A Grammar of Gaddi is the fifth volume in this series and the first to focus on a language from Northern India. Earlier grammars in the series are Khowar (Pakistan), Elfdalian (Sweden), Akajeru (Andaman), and Guarani (Paraguay).
The Launch Event
The event will be hosted virtually for ~60 mins by the series editors Lily Kahn (HJS) and Riitta Valijarvi (SSEES, PLEJ) and will feature comments from speakers of Gaddi, authors of the book, and the invited speakers who will be situating the work within the broader efforts to document linguistic diversity and minority languages in South Asia.
