How Much Judaism was there in Roman Palestine?

What was the effect of the fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE, and the destruction of Judaea in the Bar Kokhba revolt in 135 CE, on the place of Judaism in the lives of Palestinian Jews of the late Roman period? In contrast to recent scholarly claims that as a result of the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple, and the failure of the Bar Kokhba revolt, Judaism shattered, it will be suggested that there is strong evidence for the vitality of Judaism among Palestinian Jews of the late second and early third century CE.

Adiel Schremer is professor of ancient Jewish history at the Israel and Golda Koschitzky Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry at Bar Ilan University in Israel. He is the author of Jewish Marriage in the Mishnah and Talmud period (2003). Brothers Estranged: Heresy, Christianity, and Jewish Identity (2010) and Ma‘ase Rav, a critical study of halakhic discourse (2019).
