Weaving Identities: Secular Jewishness in Irena Klepfisz’s Work

A trailblazing lesbian poet, child Holocaust survivor, and political activist whose work is deeply informed by socialist values, Klepfisz is an individual American voice.

This talk aims at critical analysis of the corpus of Irena Klepfisz’s work, contextualizing it as a reflection of contemporary Jewish secular identity, with a specific focus on her roles as a feminist, activist, and inheritor of the Bundist tradition. Klepfisz’s work has three primary components: post-Holocaust strategies, emotional strategies of historical reclamation, and political strategies of feminist and lesbian engagement.

Central to Klepfisz’s approach is a reconnection with pre-war Jewish traditions, a skilful reconfiguration of traumatic memories, and a quest for a sense of belonging within the realm of women’s liberation movements.
