Modern Languages: Challenges and Solutions

In this webinar we will be looking at the challenges faced by Modern Languages in Britain today. The discipline of Modern Languages find itself at a crossroads in 2021. On the one hand, schools and universities are facing increasing difficulties in recruiting students to take modern language subjects, even as, on the other, business employers report that they are crying out for staff with better language skills. In a recent business survey, 54% of employers said they were dissatisfied with their employees’ language abilities, while another study quantified the nation’s collective ineptitude in languages as costing the economy 3.5% of GDP!   In this webinar you will have the opportunity to hear about the results of a survey of A-level and university students, and A-level and HE teachers in Modern Languages, co-ordinated by the Bulletin of Advanced Spanish, as well as hear advice and suggestions from three acknowledged experts – Professor Kim Bower, Oliver Hopwood and Tom Dearing –  on how the Modern Languages can address some of the challenges it currently faces.
