1 AHRC funding
(i) The AHRC funded the London Arts and Humanities Partnership until 2024. The LAHP, like all other AHRC-funded doctoral training partnerships in the UK, made its final awards for the year 2024-25. The scheme is now closed to new applicants.
(ii) The AHRC will fund a small number of PhD studentships for September 2026 entry under its Doctoral Landscape programme.

Application procedure:
- You must have submitted an application to UCL for full-or part-time MPhil/PhD research before you can apply.
- Awards are highly competitive. Applications will only be considered if the applicant has been in contact with the Department in the normal way to discuss the research proposal and potential supervisors. This is part of the PhD admission process, and you need to allow enough time for this prior to submitting your application. Last-minute applications that have not been discussed will not be considered for funding.
- Deadline: Wednesday 14 January 2026 (1600 GMT). Please send application materials to Ms Wendy Leung in the Department of Greek and Latin. You need to send
- An AHRC Doctoral Landscape Award Application form (Word document).
- A Personal Information Monitoring Form. The data collected is for monitoring purposes only. It will not form part of the assessment process and will not affect the outcome of your application.
- A Research Scholarships cover sheet (Word document).
- A CV and an Academic transcript.
- References: these submitted as part of your degree application, and will be taken from your application form. You do not need to supply the separately to the Department.
2 UCL Graduate School Awards (PhD)
Research Excellence Scholarship (RES)
UCL offers scholarships to UK/EU students and for overseas students. Up to 40 Research Excellence Scholarships are available annually to students from any country.
Application procedure for RES awards:
- You must have submitted an application to UCL for full-or part-time MPhil/PhD research before you can apply. Your application to UCL will be used as the basis of your application for a scholarship.
- Awards are highly competitive. Applications will only be considered if the applicant has been in contact with the Department in the normal way to discuss the research proposal and potential supervisors. This is part of the PhD admission process, and you need to allow enough time for this prior to submitting your application. Last-minute applications that have not been discussed will not be considered for funding.
- Deadline: Wednesday 14 January 2026 (1600 GMT). Please send application materials to Ms Wendy Leung in the Department of Greek and Latin.
UCL Research Opportunity Scholarship (UCL ROS)
UCL’s Research Opportunity Scholarship is intended to support BAME postgraduate research degree students. The applications procedure is the same as for the RES/RXD awards above. Candidates should discuss their application with potential supervisors and then submit the single page cover sheet (downloadable at the UCL ROS webpage above) to the Departmental Office by Wednesday 14 January 2026 (1600 GMT).
3 Wolfson Scholarships (PhD)
Thanks to the Wolfson Foundation, UCL will have three Wolfson Scholarships for doctoral research in history, literature and languages available for September 2026 entrants (maintenance plus fees). The maintenance stipend for the year 2026-27 will be £29,650.

To be nominated by the Department, applicants must
- Apply to the PhD course at UCL by 9 January 2026 at the latest;
- Discuss the nomination with their potential supervisor in the Department, and provide the supervisor with an expanded version of their research project;
- Send to the Department PG administrator(Ms Wendy Leung) by Wednesday 14 January 2026 (1600 GMT)
- A full CV.
- A personal statement.
- An outline of their research project of no more than 2 pages (this does not need to contain references or a bibliography).
4 Quirk PhD Scholarships (PhD)
The Quirk PhD Scholarships support students in financial need to conduct research leading to a PhD in the fields of language and society within the Arts & Humanities.

To be nominated by the Department, applicants must
1) apply to the PhD course at UCL by 9 January 2026 at the latest;
2) discuss the nomination with their potential supervisor in the Department, and provide the supervisor with an expanded version of their research project;
3) send to the Department PG administrator(Ms Wendy Leung) by Wednesday 14 January 2026 (1600 GMT) a Quirke application form and cover sheet, a CV, and an academic transcript.
5 UCL Arts & Humanities PhD Scholarships
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is offering five fee and maintenance awards and five fee-only awards.
- Applicants proposing to pursue a research degree in Arts & Humanities departments are eligible.
- Applicants must be UK-domiciled with home fee status.

6 UK Government loans (MA and PhD)
You may be able to get a Postgraduate Masters Loan of up to £12,471. (Students who take a loan are also eligible for any of the studentships listed below.)
You may be able to get a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan of up to £29,390.

7 Other sources
The British Federation of Women Graduates gives awards annually to women in their third year of doctoral studies. The awards are given on the basis of evidence of academic excellence and are not expected to provide for financial need. The amounts offered range upwards from £1000 with the average award being around £3000.
FfWG offers Foundation Grants to help women graduates with their living expenses (not fees) while registered for study or research at an approved institution of higher education in Great Britain. The criteria are the proven needs of the applicant and her academic calibre.
FfWG offers Emergency Grants to graduate women who face an unforeseen financial crisis (not with their fees) whilst engaged in study or research at an approved institution of higher education in Great Britain. These grants will be offered twice a year, in May and November.

MA Funding
Departmental Studentships
Owing to the generosity of alumni and former colleagues, the Department of Greek and Latin is pleased to be able to offer a number of MA studentships of £2,000 to current BA final-year students within the department. Applicants must have obtained a place on the UCL MA in Classics or The Reception of the Classical World to qualify. If you would like to apply for one of the UCL Greek & Latin studentships, you need to apply directly for admission to UCL for postgraduate study and also submit an MA studentship application form to the departmental MA administrator by 15 June 2026. Awards will be made to applicants of high academic achievement, a clear commitment to postgraduate study, and/or financial need. Awardees will be notified in mid-July.
Application procedure:
- You must have applied for a place on the MA Classics or the MA Reception of the Classical World.
- Download a copy of the MA studentship application form and send it by 15 June to the departmental MA Administrator.
