Workshops in Bologna, June 2026

Two workshops will discuss two films shown during this year’s Cinema Ritrovato: the new digital restoration of Quo vadis? (Enrico Guazzoni, 1913) and Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei (Carmine Gallone, Amleto Palermi, 1926), the latter shown within the 100 Years Ago programme. The Monday workshop will be dedicated to Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei and will be entirely in English. Aylin Atacan (University College London) will discuss the architecture and layouts of the film. Valentina Rossetto (Cineteca Nazionale) will present footage shot at Pompeii by cinematographer Alfredo Donelli. The Wednesday workshop is dedicated to Quo vadis? and will be entirely in Italian. Giovanni Lasi will discuss his work on researching the Italian intertitles for Quo vadis?. Maria Assunta Pimpinelli (Cineteca Nazionale) will discuss the ‘silentscape’ of the film.

At the Monday workshop in English and at the Wednesday workshop in Italian, Maria Wyke (UCL) and Ivo Blom (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) respectively will discuss the Museum of Dreamworlds research project, which is systematically analysing all the silent films on Greco-Roman Antiquity within the collection of the British Film Institute National Archive- (mainly French and Italian films). They will introduce the project’s new website, which contains multiple essays on themes and individual films, and a large database which also includes visual resources. It will be developed over the course of 2027 and 2028.

The MoD team is keen to get feedback on the project. All presentations will offer ample room for discussion. 

• Workshops are organised by Museum of Dreamworlds, in close collaboration with Cinema Ritrovato, University of Bologna, BFI, Eye Filmmuseum, and various French and Italian film archives.
