Iphigenia
A new version of Iphigenia in Aulis by Euripides, translated and adapted by Simon Dormandy.
Part of UCL200, our celebration of the University’s 200th anniversary, this year’s production will be adapted and staged by professional theatre director Simon Dormandy. The production will also feature professional choreography and sound design by Meg Griffiths and Pierre Flasse.
An army gathers to attack Troy, but the gods demand a terrible price.
Mutiny stirs as the leaders delay.
How far will they go to save the expedition – and their own skins?
Gripping, intensely moving and at times grotesquely funny, Iphigenia, featuring Clytemnestra, Agamemnon, Achilles and Iphigenia on the eve of war, speaks to our present moment with startling immediacy. Though less frequently performed than some Euripides tragedies, the play exposes these key figures from the Iliad and Oresteia to a searching examination, throwing new and revealing light on their characters and relationships.
Simon Dormandy has worked as director, actor and dramaturg with internationally renowned companies such as Complicité, the RSC, the Donmar Warehouse, the Royal Court and many others. He has taught at RADA, Central, Bristol Old Vic and Shakespeare’s Globe.
