This course introduces some key artists and movements exploring questions of gender and sexuality in 19th and 20th Century European and American art. Classes take place in a range of London galleries, from permanent collections at Tate Modern, the National Gallery and Portrait Gallery, and Tate Britain, to more intimate exhibitions at the Black Cultural Archives, Camden Arts Centre and Pippy Houldsworth Gallery. We consider the display and exhibition of artworks and the creation of art historical narratives in the context of major social upheavals in the West across the 20th Century, including the women's liberation movements, civil rights and migration, and the sexual revolution. Featured artists include, Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, Leonora Carrington, Hannah Höch, Claude Cahun, David Hockney, Francis Bacon, Mary Kelly, among many others.
