In this gallery-based course we will examine art made in the United States from 1900 to the present day on display at various sites across London. We will start by looking at how key developments in American art over the 20th Century are represented in the collections of major London museums. We will then move to consider displays of individual artists working in the United States in public installations and commercial galleries. Possible areas of study include American photography and photojournalism, art and race, painting in the 20s and 30s, the migration of artists to the United States, painting post 1945, sculpture, film and video in the 60s and 70s, art informed by feminism and queer cultures and politics, art and nuclear politics, and contemporary American art. Possible artists include, but are not limited to, Ed Rusha, Jenny Holzer, Carolee Schneemann, Alex Prager, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, Eva Hesse, Mark Rothko and Zoe Leonard.
