In the lab

UCL Institute of Archaeology students can avail of our laboratory facilities as part of their fieldwork experience.

UCL Institute of Archaeology Photographic Lab

Archaeological fieldwork produces lots of materials that need to be analysed in the lab. Recovered finds, like pottery, tools, bones, and metal objects, need to be cleaned, catalogued, and conserved. Site drawings, photographs, and written records need digitising and organising; and materials, such as environmental and soils samples, need to be prepared for further specialist analysis.

As part of their fieldwork requirement, students help in this crucial stage of the archaeological process, where collected materials, data, and records are analyzed, interpreted, and preserved.

Several students have used materials excavated on UCL training courses to develop their own projects.
