Bodiam 100

The project Bodiam 100 seeks to carry out archaeological excavations in the wider landscape of Bodiam Castle, East Sussex.

The project seeks to carry out evaluative fieldwork to assess the character and especially the chronology of selected archaeological features in the wider landscape of Bodiam Castle; produce a comprehensive archaeological and historical statement of the site in its landscape to inform any future management plan revisions and provide up-to-date archaeological and historical information that can be drawn on for conservation, educational and interpretative use.

A community archaeology project, the fieldwork offers training and upskilling opportunities in archaeological methods and techniques to both students and members of the public. Envisaged as a three-year project, our students have joined forces with colleagues at Archaeology South-East and the National Trust to excavate at Bodiam Castle.

The first successful season took place in 2024 – enabling 140 participants to take part in a range of archaeological fieldwork and engagement activities. The final season of fieldwork in 2026 will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the acquisition of Bodiam Castle by the National Trust.
